Hans-Agne Jakobsson wall lamps

A rare set of five model V236 outdoor wall lamps designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The lamps are constructed primarily from copper and measure approximately 18.5 cm wide × 25 cm high × 26 cm deep (7.3 × 9.8 × 10.2 in) each.

The V236 has a distinctly architectural construction based on a compact, wedge-shaped enclosure. Its back sits vertically against the wall while the broad upper panel slopes outward and downward, forming a protective hood over the light source. Triangular side panels close the housing and emphasize its geometric profile. The individual sheets of copper are folded and mechanically joined, with rivets and other fasteners deliberately remaining visible as part of the construction.

At the underside, the light opening is screened by a sequence of parallel horizontal copper louvres. These blades are positioned at regular intervals and act as an optical control system, shielding the light source from direct view while allowing illumination to escape primarily downward and outward. When illuminated, the internal light reflects against the copper surfaces and passes between the louvres, producing a warm, controlled pool of light on the adjacent wall rather than an exposed point of illumination. This functional treatment of glare and light distribution is particularly appropriate to an exterior architectural fixture.

The copper has developed substantial natural patination. The exterior surfaces range from dark brown and near-black oxidized areas to muted green and blue-green verdigris, while the protected louvres underneath retain considerably more turquoise-green oxidation. Small areas of reddish and warmer brown copper remain visible around edges, fasteners and areas of wear. The resulting coloration is irregular rather than decorative or applied, reflecting the way copper changes chemically through prolonged exposure to moisture, oxygen and the surrounding environment.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a Swedish interior architect and lighting designer and an important figure in post-war Scandinavian lighting. After studying in Gothenburg, he worked professionally with interior and furniture design before establishing his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd in 1951. His lighting designs explored the relationship between the light source, reflector and surrounding architecture, frequently using layered shades, screens and louvres to control glare and produce indirect or filtered illumination. Materials such as brass, copper, aluminium, glass, wood and textile appear throughout his extensive body of work.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB developed into a significant Swedish lighting manufacturer during the second half of the 20th century. Production in Markaryd encompassed domestic, decorative and architectural lighting, with Jakobsson designing a substantial proportion of the company’s output. His designs range from sculptural interior pendants to technically oriented wall and exterior fixtures. Despite their differing applications, many share an emphasis on controlling the visibility of the bulb and shaping the direction and character of the emitted light through the physical construction of the fixture.

The V236 belongs to the more architectural and utilitarian side of Jakobsson’s work. Its restrained geometry, exposed construction and absence of applied ornament correspond closely with Scandinavian functionalist principles. At the same time, the choice of copper introduces a material that changes visibly with age. The combination of a rational enclosure and naturally evolving surface gives the lamp a character that sits between Scandinavian modernism and mid-century architectural lighting.

The set is in good vintage condition with clear signs of age and previous use. The copper surfaces show extensive oxidation, verdigris, discoloration, marks, small scratches and general surface variation consistent with exterior use. The patina is particularly pronounced around the edges, joints and louvred undersides and has been retained as part of the lamps’ aged material character. The photographs show the fixtures illuminated and functioning.
