Information

This rare pair of wall lamps, model S1591, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own workshop in Åhus, Sweden. The model dates to 1953 and represents an early phase of Jakobsson’s lighting production, where sculptural form, material sensitivity, and atmospheric light diffusion were central concerns within Scandinavian mid-century design.

Each lamp is constructed from copper with a naturally aged patina, combined with a hand-shaped glass shade in a softly rounded, almost organic form. The glass displays a pale, milky tone with a subtle crackled texture, which diffuses the light evenly and produces a warm, subdued glow when illuminated. The copper elements include a perforated upper cap and a decorative lower collar with a saw-tooth edge, both contributing to ventilation and visual rhythm. The wall-mounted arm is gently angled, creating a balanced projection from the wall and reinforcing the lantern-like character of the design.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson is particularly known for his mastery of indirect and glare-free lighting. Unlike many contemporaries who focused on metal shades alone, Jakobsson frequently combined metal with glass to soften the light output and enhance spatial atmosphere. Model S1591 reflects this approach clearly, bridging traditional craftsmanship with the emerging modernist language of the early 1950s. The production in Åhus was characterized by small-scale manufacturing and careful finishing, which is evident in the detailing and proportions of these lamps.

The pair is in good vintage condition, showing expected signs of age and use. The copper surfaces exhibit an even, well-developed patina, while the glass shades show minor surface irregularities consistent with age and hand production. These characteristics contribute to the authenticity and historical integrity of the lamps.

Dimensions per lamp are approximately 24 cm in width, 36 cm in depth, and 40 cm in height, corresponding to about 9.4 x 14.2 x 15.7 inches.
