Josef Frank table lamp
A very rare early example of table lamp model 2388, designed by Austrian-born architect and designer Josef Frank in 1936 for Firma Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. Frank began collaborating with Svenskt Tenn in 1934, developing a more expressive and humanistic interpretation of modernism than the strict functionalism then prevalent in Europe. Svenskt Tenn records that model 2388 was originally produced in brass, a material frequently used by Frank for its warm color and capacity to develop a natural patina.
The lamp is constructed around a horizontally elongated, capsule-shaped brass base supported by small circular feet. A vertical central column is wrapped in spirally applied dark green leather, creating a tactile contrast with the polished metal. Two symmetrical S-curved brass arms extend from the top of the column and support separate light sources. The compact two-light arrangement provides a broader and more evenly distributed illumination than a conventional single-bulb table lamp.
The newly reupholstered shade has a wide oval form corresponding to the geometry of the base. Its white pleated textile surface softens and diffuses the light, producing a warm and even glow while maintaining the vertical rhythm of the pleats. A brass finial secures the shade at the top, and a small switch is positioned on the base. The combination of an elongated geometric foundation, sinuous arms and leather-wrapped stem reflects Frank’s characteristic balance of functional construction, decorative detail and organic line.
Dimensions are 33 × 20 × 47 cm, corresponding to approximately 13.0 × 7.9 × 18.5 inches.
The lamp is in good vintage condition. The brass displays small surface marks, oxidation and an age-related golden-brown patina, while the dark leather wrapping shows rubbing and localized wear consistent with use. The shade has been newly reupholstered.
