Just Andersen vase

A rare Art Deco vase designed and produced by Just Andersen in Denmark during the 1930s. Cast in Andersen’s proprietary Disko metal, the piece combines a strong architectural profile with restrained ornamental detailing characteristic of his work from the period.

The vase has a broad, flared body composed of pronounced vertical ribs, creating a rhythmic, almost fan-like surface. These ribs continue into the gently scalloped rim, giving the otherwise substantial form a sense of movement and refinement. A stepped oval foot anchors the composition, while a pair of small sculptural handles with elegant scrolling profiles provides a decorative counterpoint to the vase’s geometric body.

The material is particularly characteristic of Just Andersen. Known as Disko metal, the alloy was developed by Andersen himself and named after Disko Bay in Greenland, where he spent part of his childhood. With its dark, subtly lustrous surface, the material allowed Andersen to produce sculptural objects with a visual weight and richness reminiscent of bronze while establishing a distinctive material language of his own.

The underside bears the impressed Just Andersen triangular workshop mark together with the model number D.20, identifying the piece as an original production from his workshop.

Just Andersen (1884–1943) was a Danish sculptor, silversmith and designer whose work moved between sculpture and the decorative arts. His vessels, candlesticks and other objects frequently combine classical references with the simplified geometry of Art Deco, and his experiments with metal alloys became an important part of his distinctive output.

The vase retains a deep, naturally aged patina with subtle variations and traces of use throughout, complementing the sculptural relief of the fluted surface.

Good vintage condition with signs of age and use and a naturally developed patina.
