Just Andersen attrib. bowl

Rare bronze bowl attributed to Danish designer Just Andersen and produced by GAB (Guldsmedsaktiebolaget) in Sweden during the 1930s. The attribution is consistent with documented collaborations between Andersen and GAB during this period, when the Swedish manufacturer produced a number of his designs in bronze and pewter. Comparable documented pieces carry the GAB and BRONS markings together with a model number.

The bowl has a broad, circular form with a low profile and a gently flared rim. Its sides rise from a relatively narrow foot before expanding outward through a continuous convex curve, terminating in a thin, subtly everted edge. The raised circular foot is articulated by several concentric horizontal rings, introducing a restrained architectural element beneath the otherwise smooth body. This combination of geometric definition and controlled curvature is closely associated with Scandinavian interpretations of Art Deco and Swedish Grace during the interwar period.

Cast in bronze, the surface has developed a deep brown patina ranging from reddish and warm tobacco tones to darker brown areas. Subtle green oxidation is visible locally, particularly around portions of the interior, while areas of handling and wear reveal lighter bronze tones. The interior retains visible tonal variations, spotting and traces of use. The underside bears the GAB manufacturer’s mark together with “BRONS” and the number 97, identifying the piece as model 97. GAB is documented as having manufactured other Just Andersen bronze designs during the 1930s, including individually numbered models.

Just Andersen (1884–1943) was a Danish sculptor, designer and decorative artist particularly associated with metalwork of the interwar period. His work encompassed bronze, pewter and other metal objects, frequently combining simplified classical forms with the increasingly geometric vocabulary of Art Deco. During the 1930s, Andersen designed objects in bronze and pewter for the Swedish firm GAB, making this collaboration part of the broader exchange between Danish design and the Swedish decorative-arts industry of the period.

GAB, an abbreviation of Guldsmedsaktiebolaget, was a Swedish manufacturer specializing in metal objects and decorative wares. Its 1930s production included bronze vessels and other domestic objects associated with designers including Just Andersen. Surviving examples demonstrate a characteristic system of marking pieces with the GAB emblem, the material designation “BRONS” and, frequently, a model number.

The bowl is in good vintage condition with age-related wear and an established, non-uniform patina. The surfaces show light scratches, rubbing, discoloration, darker oxidation and small areas of greenish verdigris consistent with aged bronze. The rim and raised foot display localized wear where the underlying metal appears somewhat lighter. These surface variations are visible evidence of age and use and have not resulted in any apparent alteration to the overall form.
