Paavo Tynell floor lamp
An exceptionally rare and elegant floor lamp designed by Paavo Tynell in the 1950s and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. A refined example of Finnish mid-century modern lighting, combining delicate brass detailing, natural materials, and the understated sophistication characteristic of Tynell’s celebrated designs.
The lamp features a remarkably slender brass stem, meticulously wrapped in natural cane, creating a warm textural contrast with the polished metal. The elongated silhouette rises from a circular brass base, whose simple geometric form provides a harmonious foundation for the exceptionally delicate construction.
A generously proportioned, newly reupholstered white pleated shade crowns the composition, introducing a soft architectural volume that balances the slender vertical stem. The fine pleating creates an elegant rhythm across the shade’s surface, gently diffusing the light and producing a warm, atmospheric illumination.
One of the lamp’s most distinctive features is the decorative brass finial above the shade. Composed of delicately curved brass wire loops arranged around a central vertical element, this intricate detail recalls the organic and floral motifs frequently found in Tynell’s work. Its sculptural character adds a subtle sense of ornamentation to the otherwise restrained design.
A discreet brass switch positioned beneath the shade further emphasizes the attention to detail and craftsmanship evident throughout the piece.
Paavo Tynell was among Finland’s most influential lighting designers, renowned for his ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern functional design. His creations frequently incorporate brass, natural materials, and delicate decorative elements, achieving a distinctive balance between elegance and playfulness.
Produced by Taito Oy during the 1950s, this floor lamp exemplifies Tynell’s sophisticated approach to lighting design. Its unusually slender proportions, finely wrapped cane stem, and expressive brass finial distinguish it as a particularly graceful example of Scandinavian modernism.
The lamp has been fully restored and refinished, with a newly reupholstered shade that complements the original design. It remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use.
