Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen coffee table
This very rare coffee table, model Silverline, was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Søn in Denmark in 1962. It stands as a distinctive example of Scandinavian mid-century design, merging traditional Danish craftsmanship with the era’s emerging experimentation with materials.
The table features a solid teak base with sculptural legs that splay outward in a Y-shaped form, connected by a central stretcher to enhance rigidity. A continuous aluminium inlay runs along each leg, lending the table its “Silverline” name. This precise linear accent contrasts beautifully with the organic grain of the wood and represents a rare technical detail for furniture of this period.
The rectangular tabletop is veneered in fine-grained teak with a warm medium-brown tone and subtle reddish undertones. Its edge is thin and minimally profiled, reflecting the light and elegant visual language characteristic of the early 1960s.
Peter Hvidt (1916–1986), in partnership with Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen as Hvidt & Mølgaard, was a key figure in Danish modernism. Their work combined elegant aesthetics with structural innovation, influenced by industrial production methods and export market demands. France & Søn was a leading Danish furniture manufacturer post-war, noted for collaborating with top designers and emphasizing modular construction and high-quality materials.
This table remains in excellent original condition, showing only minor wear consistent with age. The aluminium inlay is intact and seamlessly integrated into the legs, while the teak surfaces maintain even coloration and a pleasing patina.
The dimensions are 132 cm wide, 56 cm deep, and 46 cm high, approximately 52 inches by 22 inches by 18.1 inches.
