Serge Mouille floor lamp
This very rare floor lamp was designed by Serge Mouille and produced by Ateliers Serge Mouille in France in 1953. The piece is executed in black lacquered metal and brass, displaying the sculptural refinement and organic precision that define Mouille’s work.
The lamp features a slender tripod base formed by tapered steel legs converging into a vertical stem that extends upward at a subtle angle. The shade, shaped like an asymmetrical shell, is crafted from spun metal with a black lacquered exterior and white enameled interior for optimal light reflection. The shade is adjustable through a brass joint, allowing for directional illumination and functional versatility. The composition is strikingly balanced—its lightness of form countered by its graphic presence.
Serge Mouille (1922–1988) was one of France’s most important lighting designers, known for his exploration of minimal, kinetic forms inspired by natural movement and anatomy. After training as a silversmith, Mouille established his Paris studio in the early 1950s, where he created hand-crafted lighting objects that became icons of French modernism. His lamps—often characterized by curved metal arms, insect-like silhouettes, and hand-beaten shades—were conceived as functional sculptures, merging utility with artistic expression.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, with a well-preserved lacquered surface and light traces of age that lend authenticity and character. The brass joint shows a natural, warm patina consistent with careful use.
