Information

This very rare easy chair and matching stool, model Elizabeth, was designed by Danish architect Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1956 and produced by Christensen & Larsen in Denmark. The set is a distinguished example of Scandinavian mid-century modern design, combining organic form, high-quality materials, and refined craftsmanship.

The frame is made from solid teak, exhibiting a deep, warm tone with a visible grain pattern. It is sculpturally shaped with tapering legs and flowing, angled armrests, creating a visually light yet structurally expressive profile. The design highlights the negative space beneath and around the upholstered shell, emphasizing a harmonious balance between form and function.

The seat and backrest are fully upholstered in the original natural vegetable-tanned leather, which has developed a rich patina over time. The leather displays oxidation, wear, and staining consistent with age and original use. This untreated leather was intended to age visibly, underscoring the chair’s authentic materiality. The cushioning is integrated into the molded shell, providing support while softening the overall appearance.

The accompanying footstool mirrors the chair’s materials and construction, featuring a softly triangular upholstered cushion on a lightly splayed teak frame. Together, the set forms a cohesive ergonomic composition designed for reclining comfort and visual balance.

The model Elizabeth was named after Queen Elizabeth II, who is said to have acquired a pair during a state visit to Denmark in the 1950s. It remains one of Kofod-Larsen’s most iconic designs and a landmark in Danish lounge seating due to its elegant fusion of form and functionality. Christensen & Larsen was a high-quality Danish manufacturer known for their close collaboration with Kofod-Larsen and their finely detailed, small-series production.

The easy chair measures 78 cm wide, 73 cm deep, and 71 cm high, with a seat height of 35 cm (approximately 30.7 x 28.7 x 28 inches, seat height 13.8 inches). The stool measures 57 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 35 cm in height, with a seat height of 32 cm (about 22.4 x 17.7 x 13.8 inches, seat height 12.6 inches).
