Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model PH 5/4, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1930s. The lamp features a large copper upper shade that has developed a natural patina over time, paired with opal glass lower shades that diffuse light softly and evenly. It utilizes Henningsen’s signature multi-shade system, engineered to provide glare-free illumination through careful light reflection and diffusion.
Poul Henningsen was a pioneering Danish architect and lighting designer known for revolutionizing how light is used indoors. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen produced iconic PH series lamps, each designed with scientific precision to optimize comfort and aesthetics. The PH 5/4 model’s designation refers to the top shade diameter of 50 cm and the proportional size of the lower shades.
The lamp embodies Scandinavian modernism with its emphasis on functional design, craftsmanship, and material integrity. It remains in good vintage condition with original fittings intact, showcasing the authentic patination of the copper. The lamp measures 50 cm in diameter and 33 cm in height (19.7 x 13 inches), with an adjustable drop of up to 100 cm (39.4 inches).
