Information

This side table was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. While Jakobsson is primarily known for his extensive work in lighting design, this table is a rare example of his furniture craftsmanship, distinguished by its thoughtful play of form, material, and surface treatment.

The tabletop features a striking black laminate inset set within a solid teak frame. The laminate is decorated with a whimsical and rhythmic pattern of stylized white fish arranged in vertical sequences, reflecting the mid-century fascination with playful, organic motifs and line-based illustration. The teak border is finely mitered with a softly beveled inner edge, creating a framed effect that highlights the graphic surface.

Supporting the tabletop are four slender, black-lacquered steel rod legs that taper elegantly downward. The legs are minimally attached to the underside of the table, imparting a sense of visual lightness and a floating appearance. Despite this delicate look, the table is constructed robustly, with careful attention to proportional balance and spacing.

The table is in very good condition for its age, showing minor wear on the laminate, including slight surface undulations and small scuffs consistent with use. The teak frame has developed a light patina with minimal edge wear. The black lacquer on the legs exhibits minor abrasions and a few pinpoint finish losses but remains structurally sound and retains its original coating.

This piece exemplifies the Scandinavian 1950s aesthetic that merges functional utility with artistic expression. Jakobsson’s early work reveals a blend of artisanal Swedish design heritage and a progressive embrace of industrial materials and production methods. The label underneath, stating “Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, Markaryd” authenticates the table’s origin from his Swedish workshop.

The table measures 35.5 cm in width, 30.5 cm in depth, and 41.5 cm in height, approximately 14 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 16.3 inches high.
