Hans-Agne Jakobsson side table
This early side table was designed and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1950s, before his production moved to Markaryd. The table features a teak-veneered wooden frame combined with slender steel legs finished in white lacquer. The rectangular tabletop includes an inlaid glass surface decorated with a stylized atomic-age motif in gold and white set against a black background. This glass panel is housed within a raised teak border, carefully mitered at the corners and lightly chamfered to soften its profile.
Supporting the table are four elegant, flared legs made from round-section steel, finished in white lacquer. These legs taper gently toward the feet and are subtly splayed outward, giving the piece both visual lift and stability. The blend of natural teak wood and crisp steel elements reflects a transitional design language that merges Scandinavian woodcraft traditions with the international mid-century modern aesthetic.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) is primarily known for his extensive work in lighting design but began his career as an interior architect and furniture designer. His early production in Åhus was characterized by experimental pieces, often made in limited runs or as unique creations. This side table exemplifies his early exploration of materials, decorative surfaces, and form, themes that would later influence his lighting designs.
The table is in good vintage condition, showing light patina on the lacquered legs and minor wear to the teak and glass, consistent with age and use. All original elements are intact and the piece remains structurally sound. Its dimensions are 36.5 centimeters wide, 31.5 centimeters deep, and 41 centimeters high (approximately 14.4 by 12.4 by 16.1 inches).
