Information

This side table was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. While Jakobsson is best known for his innovative lighting designs, this table reveals his exploration of furniture where sculptural form and contrasting materials come together with equal finesse.

The tabletop features a rectangular surface decorated with an abstract pattern reminiscent of botanical or microscopic radiolarian forms, rendered in off-white and light sepia tones against a dark background. This patterned laminate or printed board is set within a solid teak frame, lightly rounded along the upper edge and showcasing expressive wood grain in a warm amber hue. The organic motif reflects the mid-century Scandinavian modern interest in stylized nature-inspired decoration.

The base is constructed from black lacquered steel rods arranged in an angular, triangulated bracing structure that provides both stability and a distinctive graphic presence. The lower section of each leg is wrapped in black wire or tightly coiled synthetic rattan, reinforcing the feet while adding subtle texture. Each foot ends in a flat disk to balance the piece and protect flooring surfaces.

The table is in fair vintage condition. The top surface shows significant age-related wear, including discoloration, fading, and scattered stains that partially obscure the original pattern. The teak frame exhibits edge wear and surface blemishes, while the lacquered steel base has abrasions and minor paint loss consistent with use. Despite these signs of wear, the structure remains sound, preserving the table’s historical character and visual appeal.

This piece exemplifies the intersection of decorative and functional design in Jakobsson’s work, merging mid-century Swedish craftsmanship with modernist tendencies toward expressive surfaces and minimal structural form.

The table measures 42.5 cm wide, 35.5 cm deep, and 44 cm high, approximately 16.7 inches by 14 inches by 17.3 inches.
