Percival Lafer sofa
This is a rare two-seat sofa designed by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer and produced by Lafer MP in Brazil during the 1960s. The piece exemplifies Lafer’s characteristic combination of modernist structure with deep ergonomic comfort. The frame is constructed from solid rosewood with a dark reddish-brown tone and a finely polished surface. The structure supports a suspended leather body with prominent tufting and deep cushioning, upholstered in brown leather that has aged gracefully, displaying a rich patina and subtle wear from use.
The sofa’s form is relaxed and inviting, with a low, reclined profile and wide armrests that extend outward as a continuation of the deep seat. The headrest is a separate cylindrical cushion mounted on a metal rod, adjustable and visually separated from the main backrest, contributing to the sofa’s layered visual construction. The back of the sofa reveals an exposed support system composed of thick black leather straps and visible bolts, a signature of Lafer’s functional and expressive approach to joinery and upholstery.
Percival Lafer is a central figure in the history of Brazilian mid-century furniture design. His work, while rooted in the broader international modernist idiom, is distinguished by a strong commitment to comfort, modularity, and a visual softness achieved through his use of pliable leather, rounded forms, and innovative structural techniques. In his Lafer MP line, Lafer employed mass-production-oriented techniques without compromising on the richness of material and form. This series was widely exported and became an emblem of Brazilian modernism in both domestic and international markets.
This example is in good vintage condition, with signs of usage and an even patina on the leather. The rosewood frame remains structurally stable and retains its natural luster, while the leather upholstery shows slight creasing and light discoloration, consistent with age and use.
The dimensions of the sofa are 155 cm in width, 100 cm in depth, and 85 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm. In imperial units, this equates to approximately 61 inches wide, 39.4 inches deep, and 33.5 inches high, with a seat height of 15 inches. Matching three-seat sofa and easy chair versions from the same model line are also available.
