Information

This rare four-seat sofa, model GE-236/4, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from solid oak, it retains its original dark wool upholstery and exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian principles of structural clarity, durability, and visual restraint.

The oak frame features a natural matte finish that reveals the tight grain and warm honeyed tones of the wood. The rear is fully exposed, with horizontal slats spanning the backrest and side supports that tilt slightly backward. The frame combines functional efficiency with formal rhythm, showcasing Wegner’s meticulous attention to joinery, ergonomics, and material authenticity. Rectangular section legs are connected by angular stretchers beneath the frame, providing stability and subtle visual weight.

The seat and back cushions are upholstered in original dark olive-green to brown wool fabric with a fine weave and muted, earthy tones. Each of the four back cushions is evenly tufted with three rows of fabric-covered buttons, while lighter contrast piping outlines the cushions, adding definition to the otherwise restrained palette. The upholstery remains clean and consistent in tone, exhibiting only minor signs of age without notable fading or structural compromise.

Hans J. Wegner, a central figure in Danish modernism, was renowned for his deep carpentry knowledge and commitment to refined functionalism. His collaboration with Getama from the late 1940s onward produced many innovative seating designs. The GE-236 series, developed in the 1960s, represents a move toward modular and more relaxed seating while maintaining Wegner’s characteristic balance of form and function.

This sofa remains in very good vintage condition, with original fabric and wood surfaces showing minimal wear consistent with careful use. It is structurally stable and unaltered. The dimensions are 235 cm wide, 85 cm deep, and 73 cm high, with a seat height of 38 cm, approximately 92.5 inches wide, 33.5 inches deep, 28.7 inches high, and a seat height of 15 inches.
