Otto Schulz easy chairs
This is a rare pair of easy chairs, model Schulz, designed by Otto Schulz and produced by Boet in Sweden during the 1940s. These chairs exemplify the elegant and opulent expression associated with Schulz’s design work, integrating rounded organic forms with rich material contrasts. The design features a crescent-shaped backrest with deep button tufting, forming a visually sculptural and inviting enclosure around the sitter. The profile is low and generous, typical of mid-century lounge furniture but with a distinctly decorative refinement.
The chairs are constructed with frames in dark-stained beech, contrasted by new upholstery in golden yellow velvet fabric. The velvet has a dense, matte pile that enhances the tactile richness of the form while offering subtle tonal depth under varying light. The seat is fully upholstered and thickly cushioned, offering a soft and supportive experience. The backrest is wrapped in a continuous upholstered arc, creating a semi-open shell that floats slightly above the seat and is supported at the base with a slight inward tilt. The legs are rounded and tapered, with a gentle outward splay that balances the upper volume visually and structurally.
Otto Schulz (1882–1970), originally from Germany, was an influential figure in Swedish interior architecture and furniture design. He founded the company Boet in Gothenburg in the 1920s, which became a central platform for promoting both his own work and broader Swedish modernist aesthetics. Schulz’s style often included richly upholstered seating, scalloped backs, and detailed textile treatments, combining comfort with sophisticated, expressive forms. The Schulz model chairs are among his most recognizable seating designs, widely appreciated for their blend of sculptural presence and intimate scale.
These examples remain in excellent structural condition, with the upholstery recently restored. The wooden legs show minimal signs of age and wear, retaining their original finish and form.
