Johannes Andersen coffee table
This rare coffee table is designed by Johannes Andersen and was produced by Trensum Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1960s. The table is constructed from solid and veneered teak, showcasing the sculptural elegance and fine craftsmanship characteristic of Andersen’s mid-century Scandinavian work. The overall form is low and elongated, with a rectangular top and refined tapering legs. Each leg is subtly shaped with rounded transitions and is connected by gently curved stretchers that lend both structural support and a visual rhythm to the design.
A defining feature of this model is the inclusion of two integrated drawers located at each end of the table. The drawers are accessible from both long sides, enhancing functionality and allowing the piece to be used effectively in open-plan settings. Each drawer features an inset sculpted handle carved directly from solid wood, demonstrating careful attention to tactile and visual detail. Dovetail joinery is used on the drawer boxes, indicating traditional construction methods and quality standards.
The teak exhibits a rich, even tone with well-defined grain patterns and a warm patina developed over time. The top surface is slightly beveled along the edges, softening the visual impression and emphasizing the organic flow of the wood grain. The overall proportions and materials reflect the modernist ideals of form following function, while also highlighting the influence of handcrafted tradition.
Johannes Andersen was a Danish designer known for his organically contoured furniture and integration of sculptural detail within functional forms. His designs often merged Danish material sensibilities with futuristic lines and bold silhouettes. Although primarily associated with Danish manufacturers, pieces by Andersen were also produced in Sweden, including by Trensum Möbelfabrik, known for their solid craftsmanship and alignment with Scandinavian modern principles.
This piece is in good vintage condition, with signs of wear, minor surface marks, and natural patina throughout, consistent with age and use. The drawers operate smoothly and are structurally sound.
The dimensions are 160 cm in width, 58 cm in depth, and 50 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 63 inches wide, 22.8 inches deep, and 19.7 inches high.
