Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps
These very rare ceiling lamps, model A1957, were designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. They feature a finely crafted brass structure with softly curved, bell-shaped shades that taper into slender necks. The brass has developed a warm patina that enhances the lamps’ vintage character. The shades are punctuated by small perforations arranged in a decorative pattern, allowing light to gently filter through and create a subtle atmospheric effect when illuminated.
A defining aspect of this model is its height-adjustable mechanism, which employs a counterweight system featuring a teardrop-shaped brass element and a pulley system that enables smooth vertical movement. This practical detail is characteristic of Tynell’s approach, combining elegance with functionality in his lighting designs.
Paavo Tynell was one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers, renowned for merging craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics. His work often incorporated organic shapes and refined metalwork inspired by nature. Taito Oy, the company he co-founded, played a key role in producing high-quality lighting that helped define Finnish modernism during the mid-20th century.
These lamps embody Scandinavian Modern design through their minimalist forms, premium materials, and emphasis on diffused, ambient lighting. The brass construction ensures durability and timeless appeal, while the perforated shade design enhances the warmth and texture of the light.
The lamps are in good vintage condition, with well-preserved patina on the brass surfaces. The height adjustment mechanism functions smoothly, and original details remain intact. Each lamp measures 19 cm in diameter (7.5 inches), with an adjustable height ranging from 105 cm (41.3 inches) to 155 cm (61 inches).
