Information

This very rare ceiling lamp, model 9029/3, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp is an exquisite example of Tynell’s artistic approach to lighting design, blending sculptural form with delicate decorative details inspired by nature. His work is widely recognized for its poetic use of perforated brass, floral motifs, and glass elements, often elevating utilitarian lighting to works of art.

The fixture is composed of a central brass stem extending from a hemispherical brass ceiling cup. From the stem radiates a composition of three upward-facing glass shades in a soft yellow hue, each shaped like a blossoming flower. Surrounding the shades are fine brass rods, delicately bent and detailed with mesh leaves and finely coiled floral elements, creating a layered, botanical structure. The brass surfaces have developed a rich patina over time, while the glass shades retain their original subtle translucency, offering warm diffused light when the lamp is illuminated.

This example is in good vintage condition, preserving its original components. The brass shows age-appropriate wear with some oxidation, light surface scratches, and patina consistent with its age. The hand-shaped mesh leaves remain largely intact, though some minor fraying is present due to the material’s delicacy. The amber glass shades are in good condition with only minor signs of wear. Viewed from below, the underside of the lamp reveals the floral structure and attachment points, characteristic of Tynell’s meticulous attention to hidden details.

Paavo Tynell was one of Finland’s most important lighting designers and a key figure in Scandinavian mid-century design. His collaboration with Taito Oy produced some of his most iconic works, which are now highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Tynell’s lamps often evoke organic forms and are notable for their handcrafted detailing, reflecting both Art Nouveau and functionalist influences.

The lamp measures 35 cm in diameter (13.8 inches) and 75 cm in height (29.5 inches).
