Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp

Information

This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies Tynell’s ability to harmonize natural materials with soft, modernist forms, creating lighting that is both decorative and functional. Tynell’s work often reflects a refined yet organic aesthetic, and this piece is a representative example of his design language.

The lamp features a cylindrical opaline glass shade with rounded shoulders and a gently domed bottom. The surface is encased in a geometric net of hand-applied cane, forming a diamond lattice pattern that creates visual rhythm and texture. The contrast between the warm tone of the cane and the smooth, matte translucence of the white opaline glass produces a subtle interplay of materials, even when the lamp is unlit. When illuminated, the lamp emits a diffuse and warm ambient glow, and the cane structure casts a softly patterned silhouette.

The suspension includes a patinated brass canopy and a twisted black fabric cord. The light has been newly rewired for safety and modern use. The overall condition is excellent, with minimal signs of age and no structural damage to the glass or cane.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers, known for his pioneering work in the field of architectural lighting and his collaborations with architects such as Alvar Aalto. He was a founding member of Taito Oy and later designed for Idman, bringing a poetic sensibility to industrial production. His lamps are distinguished by delicate craftsmanship, often incorporating brass, glass, and natural materials in forms that bridge functionalist clarity and decorative elegance.

This piece measures 23 cm in diameter (9.05 inches) and 35 cm in height (13.77 inches), with a total drop height including the cord and canopy of approximately 90 cm (35.43 inches).
