Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model 9029/6, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito OY in Finland during the 1950s. It exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and elegant modernism characteristic of Tynell’s lighting designs, blending organic inspiration with functionalist principles.
The lamp features a brass construction with six gently curved arms extending symmetrically from a central column. Each arm supports an opaline glass shade shaped like a tulip bud, finished in a warm cream tone that softly diffuses the light. The brass arms terminate in flared collars that seamlessly transition into the glass shades, highlighting the meticulous joinery and high-quality materials.
Delicate brass wirework resembling stylized leaves and tendrils wraps around the central hub, adding a decorative, almost floral quality that elevates the lamp from a purely functional object to a sculptural centerpiece. This leaf motif is crafted with fine detail and subtle texture, contributing to the lamp’s distinctive mid-century aesthetic.
Measuring approximately 75 cm in diameter and 83 cm in height (29.5 inches diameter and 32.7 inches height), the fixture is designed to make a striking impression in dining or living spaces, where its warm glow and elegant form can be fully appreciated.
The condition is good vintage, with natural patina to the brass consistent with age and use. One of the glass shades has a small crack, which is discreet and hardly noticeable when the lamp is installed. The electrical components have been checked and are in working order, ensuring the lamp’s functionality alongside its aesthetic appeal.
