Information

This is a rare pair of side tables or benches, model 5274, designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. Executed in solid oak with woven cane tops, the tables reflect Mogensen’s functionalist design ethos and preference for honest materials and traditional joinery, articulated here in a simple yet tactile structure.

Each piece is constructed with a square oak frame, joined at the corners with exposed dowel and tenon detailing, and raised on squared legs that are slightly inset for structural strength. The tabletop is formed by an expertly handwoven cane surface, arranged in a herringbone weave pattern with extended wraps that anchor the cane ends directly around the oak frame. This weaving method creates a continuous and integrated appearance between structure and surface, enhancing the sense of material unity.

The natural oak has aged to a warm, golden tone, with a visible grain and subtle color variation. The cane shows some wear and patina consistent with age, contributing to the vintage authenticity and character of the pair. The low profile and square dimensions make these suitable for use as occasional tables, display platforms, or modular benches.

Børge Mogensen, a central figure in Danish modernism, was known for his commitment to practical, enduring design rooted in traditional cabinetmaking. Trained under Kaare Klint, Mogensen developed a body of work that bridged functionalism with a restrained and humane aesthetic. His collaborations with Fredericia Stolefabrik began in the mid-1950s and helped define the identity of post-war Danish furniture through a series of widely respected designs for private and public interiors.

Fredericia Stolefabrik, founded in 1911, became a cornerstone of Danish furniture production in the 20th century. Their collaboration with Mogensen yielded some of the most enduring pieces of Scandinavian design. The model 5274 tables are a testament to that partnership—functional, well-crafted, and rooted in the values of simplicity and quality.

The pair is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and a warm patina. The oak frames are structurally sound, and the cane tops remain intact and stable, with minor age-related discoloration.

Dimensions per table: width 69 cm (27.17 inches), depth 69 cm (27.17 inches), height 35 cm (13.78 inches).
