Einar Bäckström floor lamp
This rare floor lamp, model 4114, was produced by Einar Bäckströms Metallvarufabrik in Sweden during the 1930s to 1940s. The lamp is a fine example of the Swedish Grace movement, which combined neoclassical ornamentation with the functional simplicity of Scandinavian design.
The lamp is constructed entirely from brass, featuring a patinated finish that highlights its historical character and adds a sense of vintage authenticity. The design includes a round, stepped base with three decorative feet, providing both stability and visual elegance. Rising from the base is a slender central column with fluted detailing, contributing to the lamp’s graceful proportions. A sculptural feature at the upper section consists of three female figures in relief, symmetrically arranged around the central support. These figures offer a neoclassical reference, adding depth and artistic interest to the design. At the top, the lamp is crowned with a wide, shallow brass reflector, designed to diffuse light upward, providing an indirect and ambient lighting effect.
Swedish Grace, a design movement that emerged in the 1920s and continued into the 1930s, combined influences from Art Deco with traditional craftsmanship and classical motifs. It emphasized refined proportions, elegant materials, and decorative elements that maintained a balance between ornamentation and restraint. This lamp captures those principles, blending decorative beauty with functional design.
Einar Bäckströms Metallvarufabrik was known for its precision metal casting and high-quality craftsmanship, particularly in lighting and decorative objects. The firm’s work reflected both traditional techniques and the evolving modernist aesthetic of the time.
The lamp remains in its original condition, with a well-preserved patina on the brass components, further enhancing its vintage appeal and authenticity.
The dimensions of the lamp are 170 cm (66.9 inches) in height and 50 cm (19.7 inches) in diameter, making it a substantial and striking piece that serves as both a functional light source and a decorative object.
