Lisa Johansson-Pape floor lamp

Rare floor lamp model 2063, designed by Lisa Johansson-Pape and produced by Stockmann-Orno, Finland, during the 1950s. This highly collectible Scandinavian Modern floor lamp is distinguished by its elegant asymmetrical silhouette, combining a circular brass base with a slender vertical stem wrapped in black leather and a gracefully curved brass arm supporting an adjustable pleated white fabric shade. The conical shade, fitted with a translucent diffuser, provides a soft and evenly distributed light while emphasizing the refined balance between functionality and sculptural form that characterizes Johansson-Pape’s work. The underside retains the original Orno manufacturer’s mark.

The lamp is manufactured from solid brass, black leather and white pleated fabric. The warm golden brass has developed a natural patina over time, complementing the matte texture of the leather-wrapped stem. The contrasting combination of polished metal, tactile leather and finely pleated textile reflects the careful material selection typical of Finnish mid-century lighting. Lisa Johansson-Pape (1907–1989) is regarded as one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers of the twentieth century. Originally trained as a furniture designer, she began designing lighting for Stockmann in the late 1930s before becoming closely associated with Orno from 1942 onward. Her philosophy emphasized that lighting should first fulfill its functional purpose before becoming a decorative object, resulting in designs that combine technical efficiency with understated elegance. Johansson-Pape received international recognition through the Milan Triennale exhibitions during the 1950s, and her work remains among the defining achievements of Scandinavian lighting design.

Stockmann-Orno was one of Finland’s leading lighting manufacturers throughout the mid-twentieth century. Founded as Orno in 1921 and later owned by the department store Stockmann, the company collaborated with many of Finland’s foremost designers, producing lighting that combined high manufacturing standards with progressive modernist aesthetics. During the post-war decades, Orno became synonymous with functional Scandinavian design and played a significant role in establishing Finnish lighting on the international stage. Model 2063 is among Johansson-Pape’s most distinctive and sought-after floor lamps, documented in the Stockmann-Orno catalogue of 1951 and admired for its unusual curved brass arm, leather-wrapped stem and balanced proportions.

The lamp represents the Scandinavian Modern movement of the 1950s, where organic forms, restrained ornamentation and carefully selected natural materials were combined with practical engineering.
