Information

This rare pair of bureaus or side tables was designed by Finnish architect Ilmari Tapiovaara and produced by ASKO in Finland during the 1950s. The pieces embody Tapiovaara’s hallmark functionalist style, which combines practical design solutions with clearly defined construction details and a nuanced sensitivity to materials. These compact storage units were likely intended for use as nightstands or side tables in both residential and institutional environments.

Constructed from solid teak and teak veneer, the cabinets display a warm amber tone with a consistent vertical grain and a semi-matte finish that highlights the natural character of the wood. Each unit is supported by a recessed plinth base, also crafted from teak, which elevates the cabinet visually while maintaining a grounded, monolithic presence. The base is flush-set beneath the cabinet body and inset from all sides, enhancing the optical clarity and purity of the form.

The front of each bureau features four drawers, each equipped with wide, horizontally slatted handles integrated seamlessly into the front panels. This design eliminates the need for external hardware and contributes to a clean, linear aesthetic, establishing a rhythmic visual effect across the facade. The drawer boxes are made from solid wood, joined with dovetail construction and fitted with smoothly operating runners, underscoring the quality craftsmanship typical of ASKO’s production during this period.

ASKO was among Finland’s foremost modern furniture manufacturers in the mid-20th century, collaborating with key Finnish designers such as Ilmari Tapiovaara, Alvar Aalto, and Ilkka Suppanen. Tapiovaara himself was a pivotal figure in Finnish modernism, advocating for democratic design principles centered on honest materials, economical forms, and adaptability to serial production. His work often bridged traditional craftsmanship with industrial manufacturing techniques.

This pair remains in very good vintage condition, exhibiting an even color throughout, minor surface wear consistent with age, and smoothly functioning drawers. The original ASKO branding is present on the reverse of each unit, confirming authenticity.

Each bureau measures 58 centimeters in width, 38 centimeters in depth, and 67 centimeters in height (approximately 22.8 inches wide, 15 inches deep, and 26.4 inches high).
