Reino Ruokolainen dining table
This rare extendable dining table was designed by Finnish architect Reino Ruokolainen and produced by Haimi in Finland during the 1960s. The table is constructed from solid teak and teak veneer, exhibiting a warm reddish-brown tone characterized by a straight and consistent grain pattern. The surface is finished with a matte or lightly oiled sheen, which highlights the natural texture and detailed patterning of the wood.
The tabletop is rectangular in shape and features a concealed draw-leaf extension mechanism that allows the surface to expand seamlessly. When closed, the tabletop presents as a smooth, unified surface. When extended, a hidden leaf, stored beneath the main top, increases the table’s length to accommodate additional seating. The extension mechanism is integrated discreetly into the underside of the table, supported by well-crafted wooden components finished to the same standard as the visible surfaces.
The legs are square in cross-section and positioned flush with the corners of the tabletop, reinforcing the minimalist and architectural qualities of the design. The joints are tight and precise, devoid of decorative elements, reflecting Ruokolainen’s functionalist and practical design philosophy.
Reino Ruokolainen was active in Finland’s postwar design period, collaborating closely with Haimi, a manufacturer renowned for producing honest, well-crafted modern furniture that emphasizes durability and structural simplicity. His work often focuses on practical and modular solutions, combining careful attention to proportion with a deep understanding of material properties.
This table remains in very good vintage condition, showing minor surface wear and edge patina consistent with age and use. The extension mechanism operates smoothly, and the table’s structural integrity is fully intact.
The dimensions are 121 centimeters in length when closed and 171 centimeters when extended, with a depth of 80.5 centimeters and a height of 70 centimeters (approximately 47.6 inches closed, 67.3 inches extended, by 31.7 inches deep and 27.6 inches high).
