Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model FD-134, also known as the “Boomerang” chair, was designed by Danish architects Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Søn in Denmark during the 1950s. The design exemplifies early Danish modernism with its light, sculptural form and emphasis on high-quality materials and craftsmanship. The name “Boomerang” refers to the distinctive boomerang-shaped teak side frames, which create a continuous curved structure supporting both the seat and backrest.
The frames are made from solid teak, featuring a warm medium-brown tone and visible grain patterns, finished with a soft matte patina that reflects careful use. The wood forms a dynamic, angular profile that appears delicate yet structurally sound. The legs are tubular brass with a natural aged finish, angled outward to enhance stability and emphasize the chair’s airy presence. The backrest is composed of horizontal fagas straps, providing support while maintaining an open, transparent aesthetic.
The chairs have been newly upholstered in off-white bouclé fabric, introducing texture and subtle contrast to the teak frame. The seat and backrest cushions are separate, padded with firm foam for comfort without bulk, and feature removable upholstery in line with the original France & Søn production methods.
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were influential figures in Danish furniture design from the 1940s through the 1970s. Their work is noted for precision, material efficiency, and industrial viability, often combining solid wood and metal in elegant, compact forms. France & Søn was a leading Danish manufacturer in the mid-20th century, celebrated for blending modernist design with advanced production techniques.
The FD-134 chair marks an early and iconic transition from traditional heavy furniture to lighter, modern silhouettes suitable for mass production without sacrificing craftsmanship.
Each chair measures 60 centimeters in width, 82 centimeters in depth, and 84 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 44 centimeters. In imperial units, these dimensions correspond to approximately 23.6 inches wide, 32.3 inches deep, 33.1 inches high, and a seat height of 17.3 inches.
