Information

This rare pewter vase, signed by ORI Metall and produced by Guldsmedsaktiebolaget (GAB) in Sweden during the 1930s, features a distinctive rounded form with a flared neck. The surface has developed a deep green patina, with areas of natural oxidation and wear that enhance its aged character. Fine horizontal grooves encircle the body, adding texture, while thin metal bands at the upper and lower sections emphasize the balanced proportions of the design.

ORI Metall was a metalwork division associated with GAB, one of Sweden’s most significant metal manufacturers. Founded in 1867, GAB was renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship in silver and pewter, producing both functional and decorative objects that reflected the evolving design movements of the time. In the 1930s, Swedish metalwork embraced Art Deco and early modernist aesthetics, characterized by simple geometric shapes combined with refined detailing.

This vase exemplifies a synthesis of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship and early 20th-century design trends, favoring clean lines and understated ornamentation over elaborate decoration. The natural patina, developed over decades, is typical of aged pewter, giving the vase a unique surface quality that interacts dynamically with light and perspective.

Measuring 13 centimeters in diameter and 12 centimeters in height (5.1 x 4.7 inches), this compact piece is visually striking. Its sculptural form and rich patina make it a compelling example of Swedish metalwork from the early 20th century, embodying both historical craftsmanship and timeless design.
