Pewter box
This pewter box with integrated coasters was produced by GAB, Guldsmedsaktiebolaget in Sweden, in 1935. The object combines a compact storage box with a set of matching round coasters, forming a functional ensemble intended for table use. Its design reflects the transition period between late Art Deco and early Functionalism, where clarity of form and practical utility were increasingly emphasized alongside refined materials.
The box is constructed in pewter with a softly brushed surface that displays a subdued grey tone and a natural metallic sheen. The overall shape is asymmetrical, consisting of a rounded circular section joined to a rectangular extension, creating a dynamic yet balanced silhouette. The lid follows the same contour and is fitted with a bakelite detail at the top, serving as a handle. This bakelite element introduces a contrasting dark tone and material character, typical of the period’s interest in modern synthetic materials alongside traditional metalwork.
Inside, the box is divided to accommodate the coasters, which are also made of pewter and finished to match the exterior. The coasters are shallow and precisely formed, reinforcing the utilitarian nature of the set while maintaining a consistent visual language. The box stands on small spherical feet, subtly lifting it from the surface and adding to its refined, crafted appearance.
GAB was one of Sweden’s most important producers of metalwork during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for its high technical standards and collaborations with leading designers and craftsmen. In the 1930s, GAB produced a range of functional table and desk objects that reflected contemporary design movements while retaining traditional silversmithing expertise. This piece is a clear example of that approach, combining careful construction with restrained, modern form.
The box is in good vintage condition, showing visible signs of use and age-related patina across the pewter surfaces. These include light surface scratches and tonal variations that are consistent with its age and material. The bakelite detail remains intact, and the overall structure is sound.
The box measures approximately 21.5 cm in length, 11.5 cm in width, and 6 cm in height, corresponding to about 8.5 x 4.5 x 2.4 inches.
