Information

The PH-5/5 ceiling lamp, designed by Poul Henningsen in the 1940s and produced by Louis Poulsen, is an early and rare example of Danish modern lighting design. This particular lamp has historical provenance, originating from the Maglemølle paper factory, which adds significant context to its value and importance.

Constructed from solid copper with a nickel-plated socket housing, the PH-5/5 showcases Henningsen’s signature multi-shade system, which was designed to provide soft, glare-free illumination. The layered structure consists of three gradually decreasing shades, each strategically positioned to diffuse light evenly and minimize harsh shadows. This design ensures that light is distributed in a controlled, efficient manner, aligning with Henningsen’s principles of light control and functionality.

Poul Henningsen was an influential Danish designer and architect, widely regarded for his pioneering work in lighting design. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the 1920s, and his PH lamp series remains a cornerstone of Scandinavian modernism. The PH-5/5 model is an evolution of his early work, adapting to the needs of evolving interior spaces while maintaining his commitment to controlled light distribution.

The lamp is stamped “Patented” and retains its original design integrity. It remains in well-preserved vintage condition, with a patina that reflects its age and industrial use. The copper surfaces show natural oxidation and wear, consistent with its time period, enhancing its authenticity and sculptural presence.

The dimensions of the lamp are a diameter of 50 cm (19.7 inches) and a height of 35 cm (13.8 inches). The PH-5/5 is not only a functional light source but also a highly collectible piece of design history, embodying Henningsen’s innovative approach to lighting that continues to influence the field today.
