Jacob Kjær sofa
This is a unique four-seat sofa designed collaboratively by Jacob Kjær and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by master cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær in Denmark during the 1930s. The piece exemplifies early Scandinavian modernism, merging traditional craftsmanship with evolving functionalist design ideals. The construction incorporates a solid Cuban mahogany frame with rosewood elements, supporting original upholstery in hand-patinated Niger leather. The seating structure is composed of four distinct but continuous sections, unified by a linear base and raised on eight square legs.
The leather is vegetable-tanned Niger hide, known for its distinctive surface character and depth of color. Over time, the material has developed a varied patina with rich caramel to deep brown tones, visible creasing, wear patterns, and subtle mottling that reflect the passage of use and age. The back and seat cushions are fully integrated and finished with nailhead trim along the base edge, anchoring the upholstery visually to the wooden frame.
Jacob Kjær (1896–1957) was a central figure in Danish cabinetmaking, trained in both Denmark and Germany, and known for his adherence to fine craftsmanship, proportion, and classical modern design. His workshop produced high-quality custom furniture, often for government and diplomatic institutions. Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) later became renowned for his work with Peter Hvidt but also contributed to several independent collaborations in the 1930s, bringing a forward-looking sensibility to traditional forms.
This sofa reflects a transitional aesthetic between Art Deco and Scandinavian modernism, with restrained detailing, generous proportions, and a focus on artisanal techniques. The condition is good vintage, with evident signs of wear and patina throughout the leather, consistent with age and careful use. The frame remains structurally sound, with only minor scuffs and oxidation to the wooden legs.
Dimensions are 235 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, and 84 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 92.5 inches wide, 27.6 inches deep, 33 inches high, and 16.9 inches seat height.
