Hans Wegner dining chairs
Rare set of six dining chairs, model W1, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by C.M. Madsen in Denmark during the 1950s. The chairs are constructed from solid oak with a warm medium-brown tone and feature original leather upholstery in a deep brown with heavy patina and pronounced signs of use. The seats are saddle-stitched and fitted over a gently curved frame that reflects Wegner’s functional yet sculptural approach to seating. Each chair features a solid curved backrest that merges into the rear legs in a continuous flow, creating a unified organic form. The backrest is ergonomically shaped and smoothly chamfered at the ends.
The seat has a slight concavity and is framed by rounded rails that soften the geometric structure. The legs taper elegantly and are slightly splayed to provide visual lightness and stability. The oak frames remain in good structural condition with an even aged patina and surface wear consistent with age and use. The leather shows extensive wear, scuffing, and discoloration, contributing to the authenticity and character of the set. Despite the wear, the upholstery is intact, and the chairs retain their original materials.
Dimensions are 55.5 cm wide, 46 cm deep, and 76 cm high, with a seat height of 42 cm (approximately 21.9 x 18.1 x 29.9 inches, seat height 16.5 inches). This early model is an uncommon example of Wegner’s work and illustrates the Danish designer’s mastery in combining craftsmanship, comfort, and clarity of form.
