Severin Hansen side table
This rare side table, designed by Severin Hansen Jr. and produced by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark during the 1950s, is an exemplary piece of Danish mid-century modern furniture. Crafted in richly figured rosewood, the table embodies the clean lines and precise construction that define Hansen’s body of work and Haslev’s cabinetmaking tradition.
The table is composed of a rectangular top with a sharply mitered frame, which joins seamlessly at the corners with Hansen’s signature angular detail. The top rests on four tapering legs, also miter-joined, contributing to the table’s visual lightness and formal clarity. Beneath the top sits a lower shelf, providing secondary storage or display space while reinforcing the structure. The dark rosewood presents dramatic grain patterns with alternating streaks of brown, red, and black, creating depth and variation across all surfaces.
Severin Hansen Jr. was an influential figure in Danish modern furniture, particularly noted for his geometric compositions and meticulous joinery. His designs often highlighted the capabilities of the skilled craftsmen at Haslev Møbelsnedkeri, a workshop known for its dedication to precision and quality materials. The refined aesthetic and subtle details of this table reflect a broader movement in Scandinavian design that favored timelessness, utility, and elegance in form.
The table remains in good vintage condition, with light wear and signs of usage appropriate to its age. The rosewood retains its luster and is free from structural defects. Patina is visible on contact points, such as the legs and shelf edges, adding authenticity to the overall presentation.
The dimensions are 70 cm wide (27.6 inches), 45 cm deep (17.7 inches), and 48 cm high (18.9 inches).
