Information

This rare easy chair model Oda was designed by Arnold Madsen in 1953 and produced in Denmark. The chair is a notable example of postwar Scandinavian design, combining sculptural form with refined craftsmanship. It features a distinctive organic shell-like seat with a high, enveloping backrest that curves seamlessly around the sitter, offering both visual harmony and ergonomic comfort. The chair rests on elegantly tapered legs made of solid teak, angled to emphasize the dynamic profile of the piece.

The frame is newly upholstered in a high-quality wool fabric in a neutral grey tone that complements the warmth of the teak details. The soft texture and subtle weave of the fabric enhance the tactile and visual depth of the chair. Wooden inlays are integrated into the armrests, forming sculptural leaf-shaped elements that emphasize the chair’s craftsmanship and organic flow. These teak inserts provide a striking contrast to the textile surface while underlining Madsen’s sensitivity to material interplay.

Arnold Madsen (1907–1989) was a Danish furniture designer known for his sculptural approach to seating design and his collaborations with Henry Schubell. His work bridges craftsmanship and industrial production, often characterized by innovative upholstery techniques and fluid, organic forms. The Oda chair embodies the optimism and experimentation of Danish mid-century design, reflecting both the functionalism and artistry that defined the era.

This example remains in excellent vintage condition, showing light signs of age and a beautiful patina to the teak wood. The newly applied upholstery follows the original specifications, preserving the intended proportions and curvature of the design. The structure is stable and the surfaces well-preserved, testifying to the quality of Danish furniture craftsmanship from the period.
