Estrid Ericson & Nils Fougstedt jar
This pewter jar with lid, designed by Estrid Ericson and Nils Fougstedt for Svenskt Tenn, is a distinctive example of Swedish Grace—an early 20th-century movement blending neoclassical references with modern craftsmanship. The model, designated A 260, was initially conceived in 1926 and later revised to include the playful lion finial seen on this example. This specific version was produced in 1929, as evidenced by the “C8” date code and the hallmark stamped on the underside, which includes the iconic angel emblem and the inscription “SVENSKT TENN STOCKHOLM”.
The cylindrical body is ornamented with a precisely engraved pattern of repeating triangles arranged in a grid structure. Each triangular motif is defined by a combination of incised and dotted lines that add both depth and tactility. This geometric decoration provides a stark but elegant contrast to the smooth upper and lower rims. The lid is surmounted by a stylized lion sculpted in the round, serving as a handle. This lion, with its upright pose and arched tail, introduces an element of whimsy to an otherwise formal and restrained form.
Estrid Ericson (1894–1981), founder of Svenskt Tenn in 1924, was a visionary in Scandinavian decorative arts, known for commissioning modern designs in traditional materials. Nils Fougstedt (1881–1954), a silversmith and sculptor, collaborated with Ericson during the formative years of the company, creating metalware that merged artistic expression with utility. Their work together helped define the aesthetic direction of Svenskt Tenn before the arrival of Josef Frank in the 1930s.
Pewter, once regarded as a medieval material, was reimagined by Swedish Grace designers in the 1920s as a noble and modern medium. This jar exemplifies that reinterpretation, combining historicist imagery and decorative craft with a modern form language.
Dimensions: Height 22 cm (8.66 inches), Diameter 15 cm (5.91 inches).
