Hans Olsen (1919–1992) was a Danish furniture designer associated with the experimental and playful side of Danish modern design. While many of his contemporaries pursued restrained functionalism, Olsen became known for designs that combined practical ingenuity with sculptural and sometimes unconventional forms.

Biography
Hans Olsen trained as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he was influenced by Kaare Klint’s teaching and the strong Danish cabinetmaking tradition. After completing his studies in the late 1940s, Olsen established his own design studio and began developing furniture that often challenged conventional typologies.

Olsen’s work is characterized by inventive spatial solutions and an interest in multifunctional furniture. Among his most recognized designs is the Fried Egg Chair (1956), an asymmetrical lounge chair that departs from the strict symmetry typical of Danish modern seating. Another notable example is the Roundette dining set (1952), in which dining chairs nest neatly beneath the table, creating a compact and visually cohesive arrangement.

Throughout his career Olsen collaborated with manufacturers such as CS Møbler and Brande Møbelfabrik, producing furniture in teak, oak, and rosewood. His designs frequently emphasize curved forms, integrated structures, and practical adaptability, reflecting a desire to rethink how furniture functions within domestic interiors.

Although less internationally famous than some of his Danish contemporaries, Hans Olsen’s work remains distinctive for its originality and technical creativity. Today his furniture is increasingly appreciated for the way it expands the vocabulary of Danish modern design, introducing elements of playfulness and spatial ingenuity while maintaining the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Scandinavian tradition.
