Information

This very rare set of six dining chairs, model SM 521 — commonly known as the “Cowhorn” chairs — was designed by Knud Færch and produced by Slagelse Møbelfabrik in Denmark. A refined example of Danish modernism, the design is celebrated for its fusion of sculptural elegance, ergonomic integrity, and material harmony. The name “Cowhorn” refers to the distinctive shape of the backrest, which is defined by a gracefully curved crest rail that sweeps outward in a horn-like arc, providing both visual character and superb support.

Each chair is crafted from a combination of oak and teak, a material pairing that enhances the subtle contrasts between light and dark wood tones. The teak is typically used for the sculptural upper backrest, where its rich color and smoother grain accentuate the curved form, while the oak provides a lighter structural frame that contributes to the chairs’ strength and light visual presence. The legs taper elegantly and are joined with precision, a testament to the high standards of Danish cabinetmaking in the 1950s and 1960s.

The seats are upholstered in a durable, neutral-toned fabric that complements the natural warmth of the wood. The upholstery offers both comfort and a subdued modern aesthetic, allowing the distinctive woodwork to remain the focal point. The proportions of the chair and the angle of the seat and backrest reflect Færch’s interest in human-centered design and his commitment to creating furniture that is not only beautiful but also intuitively comfortable.

Knud Færch (1924–1992) was a Danish designer known for his rigorous attention to form, proportion, and functionality. Trained as both an architect and a cabinetmaker, he brought a sculptural sensibility to his furniture, with particular emphasis on seating. His work for Slagelse Møbelfabrik, including the SM 521, is among his most celebrated and exemplifies the core principles of Danish modern design: clarity of form, honesty in materials, and enduring craftsmanship.

This set remains in excellent vintage condition. The wood surfaces display a rich patina with minimal wear, highlighting their authenticity and well-preserved state. The joints are solid, and the upholstery is clean and intact, reflecting both the original quality and careful use over time. As a complete set of six, the chairs represent a rare and valuable ensemble that captures the understated innovation of Danish design at its peak.
