Information

This very rare set of ten dining chairs—comprising eight side chairs and two armchairs—model SM 521, also referred to as the Cowhorn chair, was designed in 1969 by Knud Færch and produced by Slagelse Møbelfabrik in Denmark. As one of the defining works of Færch’s career, this model exemplifies the Danish modern tradition through its refined sculptural form, masterful woodworking, and thoughtful ergonomic detailing.

The most distinctive feature of the SM 521 is the curved backrest, shaped to resemble the sweeping horns of a cow. This design element gives the chairs their colloquial name while also providing visual elegance and superior lumbar support. The backrests are carved from solid teak, chosen for its rich reddish-brown tone and pronounced grain, and are seamlessly joined to the rest of the frame with exceptional precision.

The legs and supporting structure are crafted from oak, offering a visual and tactile contrast to the darker teak. The combination of these two woods enhances the depth of the design, with oak’s lighter golden tone highlighting the fluid transition of curves and joinery. The construction is clean and robust, with smoothly rounded edges and subtle tapers that express a sculptural softness while maintaining structural integrity.

Each seat is upholstered in a textured, durable fabric with interwoven shades of brown and grey, chosen to complement the natural tones of the wood while adding a layer of visual texture. The upholstery is tailored with clean lines and sits firmly over a shaped seat base that provides comfort without compromising the chair’s light visual profile.

The condition of the chairs is excellent vintage. The wooden frames have been well preserved, showing only minor signs of age, such as faint surface marks and a warm patina consistent with careful use. The upholstery is in very good condition, retaining its texture and tone, with no tears or heavy wear.

Knud Færch (1924–1992) was a Danish designer who contributed significantly to the development of sculptural wood furniture in the mid-20th century. His designs are characterized by refined joinery, balanced proportions, and a deep understanding of form and function. Produced by Slagelse Møbelfabrik, a workshop known for its commitment to fine Danish cabinetmaking, the Cowhorn chairs remain a highly collectible example of Færch’s work.
