Information

This easy chair, model Sirocco, was designed by Swedish designer Arne Norell and produced by his own workshop, Arne Norell AB, in Aneby, Sweden. Introduced in 1964, the Sirocco chair is one of Norell’s most recognizable designs, embodying the relaxed elegance and craftsmanship that defined Scandinavian mid-century furniture. It reflects Norell’s philosophy of combining traditional materials and artisanal techniques with modernist ideals of comfort and simplicity.

The chair features a rosewood frame with brass fittings and original red leather upholstery, a combination that highlights both luxurious materials and refined construction. The Sirocco is an example of the so-called “safari chair” typology, a design language popularized in the mid-20th century and characterized by its self-supporting structure, where leather slings are tensioned between the wooden elements without the use of screws or glue. This results in a piece that is both lightweight and strong, while also being easy to disassemble and transport. The visible joinery and hand-stitched leather emphasize the artisanal quality and attention to detail typical of Scandinavian modernism.

Arne Norell (1917–1971) was known for his focus on comfort, versatility, and craftsmanship. His furniture often drew on traditional campaign and safari furniture while reinterpreting them with a modern Scandinavian sensibility. Pieces like the Sirocco exemplify his ability to merge timeless design with practical functionality, making his work highly collectible today.

This example remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use, including a soft, naturally aged patina on the leather. The red leather upholstery, paired with the rich tones of the rosewood and the warm brass details, gives the chair a striking yet refined presence.
