Johannes Andersen sofa
This is a very rare sofa, model “Capri” designed by Johannes Andersen and produced by Trensum in Sweden during the 1960s. The design exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century modernism with a distinct sculptural form and an emphasis on luxurious materials and modernist elegance.
The sofa is upholstered in its original dark red leather, which has developed a deep patina that enhances the texture and visual character of the surface. The leather shows signs of natural wear, including subtle creasing and surface variation, which are consistent with careful use over time. The seat cushions are integrated into the main body and framed by gently raised armrests, each of which is subtly tufted with a single button detail. The backrest follows a continuous arc, deeply buttoned, and softly contoured for ergonomic comfort.
The overall form of the sofa is highly dynamic, with a boat-like profile that curves outward at the arms and tapers toward the center, resting on two chromed steel cross bases. These bases, wide-set and Y-shaped, lend visual lightness while anchoring the structure with industrial precision. The design invites comparison to organic modernism and space-age aesthetics emerging during the mid-1960s, blending comfort with aerodynamic form.
Johannes Andersen (1903–1991) was a Danish designer noted for his bold and expressive furniture forms. While most of his work was produced in Denmark, his collaboration with Swedish manufacturer Trensum resulted in several rare and stylistically adventurous pieces such as this one. Trensum was a Swedish firm known for high-end upholstered furniture, often blending Danish modern sensibilities with their own production traditions.
This example remains in good vintage condition. The leather has notable wear from age and use, but no structural damage or major repairs are visible. The steel bases show a consistent aged finish, with light tarnish and wear appropriate for the period.
The dimensions are 255 cm in width, 90 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, with a seat height of 39 cm. These measurements correspond to approximately 100.4 inches wide, 35.4 inches deep, 28 inches high, and a seat height of 15.4 inches.
