Sven Engström & Gunnar Myrstrand side table

This side table, model “Casino” was designed by Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand and produced by Tingströms for their “Bra Bohag” line in Sweden during the 1960s. Crafted from solid and veneered oak, the piece features a light golden natural finish that highlights the fine, linear grain typical of high-quality Scandinavian oak. Its design is structured and rectilinear, balancing open and closed storage with a divided upper section comprising a single open cubby on the left and a double-drawer module on the right. The entire assembly rests on an elegantly framed base with stretcher supports.

The design prioritizes clarity and functionality, reflecting the rational and refined aesthetics of mid-century Scandinavian modernism. Rounded wooden drawer pulls are subtly integrated into the front facade, softening the otherwise strict geometric lines. This model was part of Tingströms’ initiative to provide high-quality domestic furniture under the “Bra Bohag” branding, which translates to “good household items”. The underside bears the “Casino” model stamp alongside the manufacturer’s mark.

Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand were a prominent Swedish design duo active primarily in the mid-20th century. Their work is characterized by architectural clarity and fine material craftsmanship, often combining practical functionality with understated detailing. They collaborated with respected Swedish manufacturers such as Tingströms and Bodafors, with their furniture appearing widely in both public and private interiors throughout Sweden during the postwar period.

This side table remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor surface wear consistent with careful domestic use. The construction is sturdy, and the finish retains its original tone with subtle signs of age, primarily on the edges and drawer fronts.

The table measures 100 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 59 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 39.4 inches wide, 17.7 inches deep, and 23.2 inches high.
