Poul Kjærholm sofas

The PK-31/3 sofas, designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark in 1958, are iconic examples of Scandinavian modernist design. These sofas showcase Kjærholm’s minimalist approach, featuring a frame constructed from flat steel—a material he favored for its structural clarity and refined aesthetic. The seating and backrest cushions are upholstered in black leather, creating a striking contrast between the industrial rigidity of the steel frame and the supple organic texture of the leather.

Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) was a Danish designer acclaimed for his precise craftsmanship and innovative use of materials. Unlike many of his peers who primarily worked in wood, Kjærholm specialized in steel furniture, often combining it with natural materials such as leather, cane, and marble. His collaboration with E. Kold Christensen, a Danish manufacturer recognized for its high-quality execution of modernist designs, resulted in furniture that remains highly sought after.

The PK-31/3 sofas embody a modular concept, allowing them to be used individually or configured as part of a larger seating arrangement.
