Ib Kofod-Larsen sideboard
This rare sideboard, model FA-66, was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by Faarup Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. Crafted in richly figured rosewood, the piece exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century cabinetry, harmonizing refined surface treatments with sculptural integrity and functional utility.
The front of the sideboard is symmetrically composed, featuring four cabinet doors aligned beneath four slender drawers. Each door and drawer is equipped with integrated, sculpted rosewood pulls—linear and recessed, ensuring the clarity of the form is maintained. The veneer work across the front of the sideboard is characterized by an uninterrupted flow of wood grain, achieved through bookmatching techniques, which creates a continuous rhythm of natural patterns across the facade. The tone of the rosewood is deep and vibrant, ranging from reddish to chocolate brown, with high-contrast, swirling grain typical of this prized and now restricted hardwood.
Inside, the sideboard offers adjustable shelves and compartments, along with sliding trays for flat storage, highlighting the cabinet’s functional adaptability. The body is supported by a solid rosewood underframe with tapered legs, contributing to the piece’s visual lightness and enhancing its proportions. Elevating the cabinet body off the ground reduces visual mass, a key element in Scandinavian design aesthetics of the mid-20th century.
Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a leading figure in Danish modern design, celebrated for his refined sense of proportion and attention to materiality. His works often featured clean, architectural lines and fine joinery. This model, produced by Faarup, is one of his most iconic storage designs. Faarup Møbelfabrik, active in the mid-20th century, was known for its collaboration with acclaimed designers and its dedication to superior craftsmanship and premium materials.
The sideboard measures 230 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 75 cm in height (approximately 90.6 x 19.7 x 29.5 inches). It is in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of wear and light restoration to maintain the finish and functionality.
