Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen easy chairs
This rare pair of “Sleigh” easy chairs was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Daverkosen in Denmark during the 1950s. The design is distinguished by its architectural silhouette and innovative frame construction, with the base featuring distinctive sleigh-like runners that give the chair its name. These chairs represent a key moment in Danish modernism, where structural ingenuity, comfort, and aesthetics merge through the use of high-quality materials and refined sculptural details.
The frame is constructed from solid teak with a warm reddish tone, showcasing continuous curved runners that form the legs and base in a fluid, seamless movement. The side profile reveals a rhythmic arrangement of vertical supports and rearward-leaning back slats that balance strength with visual openness. The armrests are softly rounded and gently upturned, tapering elegantly toward the front. Exposed joinery and doweling details highlight the precision craftsmanship integral to the design.
The cushions are upholstered in original dark teal leather, deeply button-tufted and segmented into structured box-formed sections. The leather has developed a subtle sheen and exhibits minimal wear consistent with age and careful use. The geometric tufting pattern contrasts with the flowing lines of the teak frame, while the firm cushions and high backrest provide balanced ergonomic support.
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were pivotal in advancing the international reputation of Danish furniture through their focus on lightweight construction, innovative joinery, and modular design principles. Their collaboration with France & Daverkosen, a leading Danish manufacturer of the mid-20th century, produced numerous pioneering seating designs intended for export and durability. The “Sleigh” easy chair stands out as one of their most sculpturally expressive creations.
The pair is in very good vintage condition, with well-preserved teak patina and original leather showing only natural minor aging. The chairs remain structurally sound, with no visible damage or signs of restoration.
Each chair measures 68.5 cm in width, 77 cm in depth, and 78 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm. In imperial units, these dimensions are approximately 27 inches wide, 30.3 inches deep, 30.7 inches high, and a seat height of 16.5 inches.
