Finn Juhl sofa
This rare sofa, model BO-77, was designed by Finn Juhl and produced by Bovirke in Denmark in 1953. It is a quintessential example of Scandinavian modernism, reflecting Juhl’s signature blend of organic forms, functional elegance, and innovative construction techniques.
The sofa features a long, linear profile with gently sloping armrests that integrate smoothly into the overall structure. It is upholstered in its original wool fabric, displaying a striped pattern in earthy green and beige tones. The interplay of vertical and horizontal stripes adds visual depth while maintaining a refined and understated aesthetic. The fabric is tightly fitted over a subtly curved backrest and seat, providing both comfort and support.
The frame is crafted from steel with a minimalist design that allows the upholstery to remain the centerpiece. Slender steel legs are capped with rosewood feet, creating a compelling contrast between industrial and organic materials. This material combination exemplifies Finn Juhl’s philosophy of balancing sculptural form with practical usability.
Finn Juhl was a pioneering figure in Danish modernism, celebrated for introducing soft, flowing lines into furniture design. His work departed from rigid geometric conventions, favoring fluid compositions that emphasized craftsmanship and material quality. Bovirke, the manufacturer, was instrumental in producing Juhl’s designs, known for their dedication to high-end Danish design and meticulous execution.
The sofa is in well-preserved condition, showing minor wear consistent with its age. It measures 250 cm in width, 77 cm in depth, and 75 cm in height (98.4 by 30.3 by 29.5 inches), with a seat height of 41 cm (16.1 inches), representing a refined and timeless piece of mid-century Danish design.
