Easy chair
This rare easy chair of unknown design was produced by a Danish cabinetmaker in the 1930s and serves as a fine example of Scandinavian Art Deco. The piece merges the stylistic curvature and solidity characteristic of the period with craftsmanship grounded in local tradition.
The chair’s structure is built on a solid wood frame featuring stained beech block feet that are square in profile and positioned flush beneath the vertical sides. Upholstered in thick reddish-brown leather, the chair’s surfaces have aged with a visible patina, surface wear, and a soft sheen. The leather displays consistent signs of use, including creases, discoloration, and scuffs—particularly on the arms and seat—befitting the chair’s age and original materials.
Its form is defined by curved side panels that rise in a sweeping arc from base to the top of the backrest. These sculptural lines integrate with rolled armrests that taper inward, creating an enveloping and comfortable feel. The deep, cushioned seat is supported by a loose seat pad resting atop a fully upholstered base. The backrest is gently angled and padded, offering firm support while maintaining a continuous silhouette from top to seat.
Though the designer remains unknown, the chair’s proportions, materials, and stylistic cues align closely with the Scandinavian Art Deco movement, which blended the international style’s bold forms and luxurious materials with a local preference for modest scale and functional craftsmanship.
The chair measures 65 cm in width, 76 cm in depth, and 89.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm, corresponding to approximately 25.6 x 29.9 x 35.2 inches, and a seat height of 16.5 inches.
