Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model “Kandidaten” was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The design exemplifies Kofod-Larsen’s signature blend of sculptural form, material integrity, and ergonomic refinement, positioning these chairs firmly within the mid-century Scandinavian design tradition.
The frames are made of solid teak, shaped with elegant, refined lines that convey a sense of lightness and sophistication. The arms extend gracefully in a horizontal sweep, tapering toward the front and curving gently downward, balancing visual rhythm with comfort. The side and back rails are finely chamfered, with rear spindles supporting the backrest at a slight recline, enhancing both stability and the chair’s open, architectural silhouette.
The cushions are upholstered in the original black leather, featuring deep square-button tufting on both the seat and back. The leather remains tight and evenly aged, showing natural creasing and a soft patina consistent with careful use. The contrast between the black leather and the warm teak tones embodies the understated yet rich aesthetic typical of Scandinavian design from this period.
Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a Danish designer celebrated for his elegant forms, subtle curves, and meticulous craftsmanship. His collaborations with OPE Möbler produced some of his most notable works in Sweden, with the “Kandidaten” model reflecting his focus on proportion, material warmth, and refined detailing.
The pair is in very good original condition, with solid frames and well-preserved upholstery. There are no visible structural repairs or modifications.
Each chair measures 72 cm wide, 78 cm deep, and 76 cm high, with a seat height of 42 cm (approximately 28.3 x 30.7 x 29.9 inches, seat height 16.5 inches).
