Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chair
This rare easy chair, model U-56—widely referred to as the “Elizabeth” chair—was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1956 and produced by the esteemed Danish cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen. Recognized as one of the most iconic examples of Scandinavian mid-century seating design, the U-56 reflects Kofod-Larsen’s characteristic synthesis of refined craftsmanship, ergonomic form, and architectural elegance.
The frame is made from rosewood, selected for its expressive grain and tonal richness. It is shaped into fluid, organic lines, with armrests that are gently curved and flow seamlessly into the chair’s rear legs. The front legs are subtly tapered, providing a visual lightness and structural coherence. The seat shell is deeply recessed and angled for comfort, while the slightly reclined backrest supports a relaxed seating posture. Upholstered in original black leather, the cushioning follows the contours of the frame, creating a unified silhouette. The visible aging of the leather and the warm patina of the rosewood lend the chair a sense of authenticity and historical continuity.
The model’s moniker, “Elizabeth” was adopted after Queen Elizabeth II acquired a pair during a visit to Denmark in 1958. Since then, the chair has been regarded as a hallmark of Danish design sophistication.
