Information

This rare pair of easy chairs, model Samsö, was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The chairs feature solid rosewood frames with rich, dark brown hues and pronounced grain patterns. Their design is distinguished by gently tapered legs, sculptural armrests, and a curved backrest supported by vertical slats. The slender construction highlights both visual lightness and structural strength.

The seating comprises the original black leather cushions, exhibiting natural patina and creasing consistent with age and use. These cushions are loose, removable, and filled with original stuffing, retaining both form and comfort. The armrests are carefully carved with a flat interior surface and outward taper, demonstrating Kofod-Larsen’s focus on ergonomic detail and material refinement.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a Danish architect and designer noted for his sculptural, organic furniture that gained international recognition in the mid-20th century. Although initially trained as an architect, he became best known for his furniture designs and collaborations with manufacturers in Denmark and abroad. His work with OPE Möbler in Sweden produced several refined lounge and easy chair models like the Samsö, blending Scandinavian craftsmanship with modernist influences.

OPE Möbler, located in Jönköping, was among Sweden’s leading furniture manufacturers in the mid-century era, recognized for its use of high-quality materials and precise joinery. Their partnerships with Danish and Swedish designers positioned them as a key producer in Scandinavian furniture during the 1950s and 1960s.

Both chairs are in very good vintage condition, with lightly restored wood surfaces and original leather upholstery that shows age-appropriate patina without any structural issues.

Each chair measures 71 cm wide, 72 cm deep, and 72 cm high, with a seat height of 38 cm (approximately 28 x 28.3 x 28.3 inches, with a 15-inch seat height).
