Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chairs
This rare and highly sought-after pair of easy chairs, model U56, also known as the “Elizabeth” chairs, were designed in 1956 by Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen. Produced by the cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen in Denmark, these chairs are a prime example of mid-century modern craftsmanship and design, reflecting Kofod-Larsen’s signature approach that combines sculptural forms with comfort-driven ergonomics.
The chairs feature solid rosewood frames that showcase rich, warm tones and pronounced grain patterns. The sculptural armrests are elegantly curved, with smooth, rounded edges that seamlessly transition into the angular backrest supports, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship employed by Christensen & Larsen. The organic yet precise geometry of the frame is characteristic of Kofod-Larsen’s aesthetic, balancing refinement with comfort.
The chairs have been newly reupholstered in Kvadrat fabric, with the main upholstery in a subtle, textured light grey wool blend. The loose seat cushions contrast with a deep teal-blue tone, offering a modern interpretation of the original design. The cushions are generously filled and rest on a recessed seat structure, contributing to the visual lightness and ergonomic profile of the chairs while maintaining their comfort and style.
Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a key figure in Danish modern design, known for his ability to work fluently with form and material. His designs are often associated with comfort-driven silhouettes and understated luxury. The U56 model earned its nickname, “Elizabeth,” after Queen Elizabeth II purchased a pair during a visit to Denmark in 1958. This purchase significantly elevated the international status of the design.
The chairs reflect the values of Scandinavian modernism: natural materials, functional design, and elegant, sculptural forms. They are in excellent restored condition with newly applied upholstery and a beautifully preserved rosewood finish, showing minimal wear and no structural repairs.
The dimensions of each chair are 79 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 71.5 cm in height (approximately 31.1 x 29.5 x 28.1 inches), with a seat height of 36 cm (approximately 14.2 inches).
